New York: No eyes, dental problems needs donations

GUS FROM NEW YORK!

Gus has a long sad story.  One of the many e-mails I received asking for a rescue to help a dog in need touched me.  Below is the request as it was sent.
BLIND !

THIS IS GUS.....

HE IS A LABRADOR MIX....HAS LONG CHOW LIKE HAIR AND A BLUE TONGUE.

HE IS MAYBE 6 YRS OLD AT MOST AND WEIGHS 55 LBS.

GUS  IS BELIEVED TO BE COMPLETELY  BLIND AND WE HAVE NO IDEA IF HE IS IN PAIN DUE TO HIS ENLARGED ONE EYE. :-(

 YET WITH NO VISION,
HE SPENDS HIS DAY LOOKING OUT OF HIS CAGE WITH BLANK,
YET PLEADING EYES.

YES, GUS  BEGS WITH HIS EYES.

" PLEASE PET ME? PLEASE TALK TO ME?"

HE GETS VERY HAPPY WHEN HE REALIZES SOMEONE HAS INDEED, NOTICED HIM.

BUT THE SAD PART IS....HE GETS OVERLOOKED ONCE PEOPLE LOOK AT HIM- AND THEN  SEE HIS EYES.

GUS LISTENS INTENTLY FOR FAMILIAR VOICES( VOICES THAT ARE NOT GOING TO RETURN. YOU SEE, NO ONE CAME TO RECLAIM GUS)

GUS USES HIS EARS AND NOSE A LOT.....

IT'S THE TWO SENSES THAT HELP HIM TRY TO UNDERSTAND THINGS.

HE  LISTENS TO VOICES, TRYING TO GAUGE WHO SOUNDS FRIENDLY AND MIGHT WANT TO BEFRIEND HIM.

HE  SNIFFS THE AIR FOR SMELLS HE HAS COME TO KNOW, SUCH AS THOSE PEOPLE THAT DO STOP TO TALK TO HIM OR PET HIM.

PLEASE HELP US GET GUS OUT OF HERE.

HE IS IN A STRANGE PLACE.

HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT IS HAPPENING TO HIM- WHY HE IS THERE- WHERE THE PEOPLE HE USE TO KNOW ARE.

HE HAS NO IDEA THAT HE IS IN SERIOUS DANGER....

WE ARE SICKENED BY  THE THOUGHT THAT THIS SWEET, INNOCENT BLIND SOUL WILL BE LED TO THE EUTHANASIA ROOM,
VERY TRUSTINGLY, HAPPY FOR THE ATTENTION HE IS GETTING, PEOPLE TALKING TO HIM, PETTING HIM- ONLY TO PUT A NEEDLE IN HIS VEIN.
 PLEASE DON'T LET GUS DIE.

Gus came home from the vet today May 7, 2007

He is doing very well and seems to act like it's no big deal!

UPDATE :  MAY 7, 2007  Gus is home from the vet. He had both eyes removed due to severe - untreated glaucoma.  He had several teeth removed and he was neutered.  He is really doing well we feel because he was already blind and it seems like it's not a big deal to him.   Now at least he is not in any discomfort.

This is Gus - he is 100% blind

His teeth are in need of extensive dental work
Gus is from New York

He is now going to make Ohio his home!

This poor dog was in a dog pound in New York when he was pulled and taken to a vet for medical evaluation.  A person in New York paid his entire bill for tests, medical evaluation and board.  Gus had no place to go!  His urgent story went out on the rescue groups e-mails.  He had a rescue say they would take him and then backed out leaving poor Gus stuck in a vet office.  We are taking Gus into our rescue!  Gus will receive the medical care he needs.  Many people asked about sending  donations when he was in New York.  The person who paid his entire bill has requested that donations now go along with Gus!  We are a 501(c)3 non profit group and donations are tax deductible.  We are agian asking for help.  Gus needs to have his eyes evaluated as you can see in the photos taken in New York - his right eye is very large and seems to be bulging out.  His left eye is not as bad although they are both blind.  He has a severe infection in his mouth and will most likely need antibiotics , dental work and extractions.  We will know more soon.  Gus is in the process of trying to catch a ride with a truck driver to make the 530 mile ride.  If this fall through he has a rescue transport set for this Saturday.  Please consider giving a donation to help us get Gus the medical care he needs.
We are not sure we know all of his medical problems at this point but his tests and boarding so far has reached between $600.00 and $1500.00.   Now he needs the rest of the treatment.
UPDATE :  APR. 24TH. 2007   Gus is on a transport with a truck driver heading to Ohio.  He will be here around midnight.
PHONE CONVERSATION WITH THE VET: GUS IS ON PAIN MEDICATION BECAUSE THE PAIN IN HIS EYES DUE TO GLOCOMA.  THE INTER-OCCULAR  EYE PRESSURE BUILDS AND CAUSES PAIN, GUS IS ALREADY BLIND.  THE VET WILL REVIEW ALL THE TESTS THAT WERE DONE IN NY AND MOST LIKELY HAVE HIS EYES REMOVED.

UPDATE:  MAY 4, 2007   GUS is at the vet clinic now and just finished up with his surgery.  He had both eyes removed, several teeth removed due to infection and abscess and he was neutered.  The vet said he came through just fine and will remain at the clinic for a few days now to monitor his condition.

Gus needs extensive dental work and more then that we have to take care of his eye problems that seem to be most urgent!
